And what if the permissions

And what if the permissions is not writable? Apart from saying: Make them writable, how do I do it?

To set Joomla's directory

To set Joomla's directory permission, it depends on where your Joomla is. If you install Joomla in your own Linux system, then, change the directory permission as usual. Check here to see how Linux permission works: http://www.basicconfig.com/linux/permission

If you are using Joomla hosted in web hosting provider server, then use tool provided in whatever interface they give you (like CPANEL), such as FILE MANAGER (if I'm not mistaken) to change the directory permission. You can also use FTP CLIENT to change the directory permission. Contact webhosting helpdesk if you don't know how to do it.

If you are using Joomla in someone else server, contact system administrator or responsible personel. They can set the Joomla's directory permission for you.

That's it.
